Chilling, to say the least!
"Within this book resides 15 dark tales, stories that do more than thrill and chill, that aspire to leave readers not only changed, but scarred. Prepare to be Traumatized. Author Alexander S. Brown explores the darkest recesses of the heart and soul to bring readers to the edge of the abyss, ready to see themselves in the hole below. (This book) exposes the depths of human depravity and the dank realms of the macabre. Learn of a depraved congregation beyond the comforts of church. Journey that downward spiral that forces a morally corrupt celebrity to revile her ugliness. Experience the lengths to which a madman will go to keep his true love." I couldn't have said it better myself. This description of this book is absolutely perfect. Brown has a way with words and a skill with the English language that makes his reading not only intriguing but downright scary! These stories, although not written in the same manner per se, do indeed hold a reminiscence to the works of Lovecraft and even Poe in some instances. I think they both would be very flattered by your work Alexander. This is the second book I've read from this author and I have to say I am beginning to really love his writing. His style is very simple and easy to follow. You can tell he puts a lot of work and thought into what is written. I am very impressed. In a world as jaded as we are it is very difficult to write good horror stories these days. But none the less this author seems to pull it off with flying colors. Well done! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes horror or just a good ghost story 👻.

It's a damn Greek tragedy!
The Iliad takes us through the battle of Troy and the Greek invasion. We are able to Marvel at great warriors like Hector and Achilles. We are able to hear of their struggles and their woes and eventually their deaths. The Odyssey takes us through the 10-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War has ended. Odysseus battles mystical creatures and the Wrath of the Gods as he tries desperately to come back home to his throne. Homer is definitely a master of the Greek epic. His writing resembles that of a playwright of modern day and even harkens back to a bit of Shakespearean feeling in the emotion of the characters. This is definitely a classic for the ages and in my opinion one that should be read once by everyone. Amazing read!
Plagued by being a social outcast in school from a broken home in 1955, Julie Morgan is invited to a birthday celebration at a concert and talent show one October evening. After being weirded out by seeing her doppelganger and being ditched by her friends, she tries to make A desperate attempt to get in with the popular crowd. But her choice to go along with their little game winds her up with a plutonic night with the concert's headliner... Elvis Presley! They sent become friends and he gives her a bit of advice involving a light bulb which becomes her mantra for the rest of her life. But as she falls down the wrong path trying desperately wants again to get in with the popular crowd she finds herself in turmoil. Never knowing her need for acceptance stems from her drunken absent father she falls further down the spiral. Will Elvis's words to her stand out and will she remember the meaning behind them? Beautifully written! The characters are written so well in the way that they speak and their mannerisms that they seem to jump right off the page. So believable it's almost scary! Be warned this is a tearjerker!!! I really enjoyed this one. One of the best I've read in a while. The author has masterful skills and I look forward to reading the second installment. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good YA read with a tissue box. Cold War plus vampires??? Oh my!!!
In 1983 the US nuclear submarine the USS Roanoke and embarques on a classified mission to discover a new Soviet submarine which is not only more deadly but could also turn the favor of the war to the Soviets. 100 fathoms below the surface, darkness in compasses the USS Roanoke. After crew members start dying, they sent discover that they are not alone down there. There is something else aboard their vessel. They are trapped in enemy waters and being pursued not only by Soviet submarines but buy something evil lurking aboard. When the lights go out darkness prevails and people die. Will they ever make it back to the surface alive? A great read! This book is very well-thought-out. I love the cover art. It hints to what you are about to read but doesn't really give it away. As soon as you think you're reading the main character story the author kills them off and you quickly move to the next character. The ending was great. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It really had me guessing. And like I said, you don't really know that it is vampires until you start reading and discover it for yourself. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who likes vampires and horror. Very cute.
Ivan is a circus performer in the smallest Big Top in the world also known as the exit 8 Big Top mall and video arcade, home of the one and only Ivan, mighty silverback. When newcomer baby elephant Ruby arrives to bring in more customers, Ivan and his elephant neighbor Stella immediately take parental guardianship over her. But when Stella's mangled feet become so infected that she ends up passing away, Ivan is left with a promise he made to her... get Ruby out of there. But how in the world can Ivan and Ruby escape to the zoo? Can they make it and keep his promise to Stella or is it all just a pipe dream? This book is written in a very choppy manner. But I understand why the author decided to do so. it is really geared towards a younger crowd and being written in the way that it does makes it easier for younger readers to follow the storyline. It is written from the point of view of Ivan the silverback gorilla which would also make it very fun for younger readers to try to see through the eyes of an animal. This book brings up a lot of emotion. It is very heavy in the fact that it brings up issues with wild animals and the question of their captivity in to spectrum. It also deals with the actual capture of wild animals itself and how brutal and disgusting it can be. However even though you are faced with these issues throughout the story you are still left with a happy ending. Which I think is best for younger readers. I really enjoyed this book. I thought the characters were very adorably written and the issues though very tragic made for an even happier ending. Delightfully entertaining. I would definitely recommend it to preteens and up. Delightfully gruesome!
Lisa's life is turned upside down by a terrible car crash that claims her father's life. There is so much healing to be done. But which scars are the worst... the physical, or the mental? Lisa soon goes back to school under the watchful eye of her psychiatrist and worrisome mother. Lisa even retains a job as a babysitter. However she soon realizes the money isn't worth babysitting this 8 year old boy. Something terrible is happening on Fear Street and it's claiming the lives of Lisa's friends one by one. Will she discover the secrets and expose the truth; not to mention make it out...alive? I can't say enough times how much I love RL Stine's writing. Just enough detail but not too much. The stories flow effortlessly from one conundrum to another. The characters are simple and believable. He is just an awesome writer. Although I thought the ending was a little goofy (as per Stine's style), the book was awesome! I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading the next Fear Street installment. I highly recommend this book to teen readers and above. In the dark shadow of Mary Shelley, here come The Bronte Sisters!
Masterfully written tales of tragedy and work with touches of romance hither and thither. These tales are most definitely classics to be read and reread time and again throughout the generations. Though the 19-Century English makes the novels a bit difficult to read, they are not hard to follow. And though a foreboding shadow looks over most of their tales, a touch of femininity peeks in throughout. Their poetry holds the same bipolar allure. Amazing classics! Do I really need to say that I recommend these books? LOL You will love to hate those children!
Mallory is a strong independent woman with a checkered past. But when she gets accused of theft and fired she must seek employment elsewhere. She does so as a nanny and housekeeper for the Colt family. Brendan Colt's wife has died and he does his best to take care of his two children Meela and Kason. But this family holds a secret and are not all they seem. Can Mallory unlock the mystery behind this seemingly normal family? A tale of mystery, romance and healing this book was very cleverly written. The story seems to repeat itself several times and stays on one scene for what seems to be too much time which makes it a little harder to read. However the story is a very interesting tale and the author keeps you guessing until the end. I. HATE. THOSE. KIDS. Ugh, they were such little brats! But I have to give the author props because anyone who can pull that kind of emotion out of me is obviously a very talented writer indeed. So thumbs-up 👍🏻Misty Mount, well done👏🏻. I would definitely recommend this book for a casual read. A great biography on a historical Legend.
Marie Laveau is the well-renowned voodoo queen of New Orleans. Her gifts and magic were legendary. Her good deeds for the colored community led her into the books of history. But could there have been more than one Marie Laveau? This book examines the historical records of Marie Laveau and tries to decipher between Marie Laveau senior and her daughter Marie Laveau the second. In this book Martha Ward takes us on a grand adventure through Voodoo country New Orleans. She paints a picture so vivid with color that you feel that you are they're watching Marie Laveau in Congo Square dancing with a snake wrapped around her body to the beat of slowly resounding drums. She examines all aspects of the life and even death of the 2 Marie Laveaus. She also paints a great setting of the early to mid-1800s and gives us a chance to peek into the world in which they lived and the tribulations they fought and overcame in their own time. Expertly written! Very clean and precise in her research, Martha Ward takes the reader on a fantastic journey through this book. Though the two story lines are a bit confusing, Ward writes it in a way to make it easier for the reader to follow along and try for themselves to distinguish between the two lines. The cover art is absolutely beautiful and Vivid with color and sets the stage for the Voodoo Queen herself. I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. Amazing storytelling especially for a biography. I love all the history that Ward has included in this book not just about the Marie Laveau's but also about the time era surrounding their lives. She obviously did a lot of very hard research in order to write this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history, voodoo, the occult, or just a really good book in general. Very interesting.
A young girl who works for the New York Post starts having very strange symptoms. She has seizures and nausea with vomiting and hallucinations. The doctors at first think that it's a classic sign of alcohol deprivation and tell her to stop partying. But with the aid of her parents she gets into a hospital where they diagnose her with everything from depression to schizophrenia and autism. A month later and countless tests both mental and physical finally help her and the doctors to distinguish the problem. But can poor Susannah Cahalan survive her month of madness? Wow what a journey! What does poor girl had to go through is completely astonishing. After all that she not only survived but got better. Most other people would not have survived her ordeal. This book was written as a memoir. Whether well-thought-out or not it is very well put together in a way that the reader can understand the madness that Susannah descends into. This book is definitely a wild ride. The end is both tragic and happy. It is interesting for me to look into the human nature of people and how they react to certain situations regarding their friends and acquaintances. Great book! I highly recommend it! |
